What students learn
Students learn a wide range of subjects in the NSW curriculum. They build skills, think creatively and prepare for life beyond school.
At Oatley Public School, students engage in a broad range of learning across all key subject areas, including English, Mathematics, Science and Technology, Human Society and Its Environment, Creative Arts, and Personal Development, Health and Physical Education. Technology is embedded into everyday learning to support creativity, collaboration and deeper understanding. We also focus on developing the 4Cs, including communication, creativity, collaboration and critical thinking, to help students become confident and capable learners.

At Oatley Public School, students can take part in special religious education (SRE) or special education in ethics (SEE) classes, depending on what’s available. These classes are delivered by approved providers.
When enrolling your child, you’ll be able to choose an option from the approved providers offered at our school. Students not attending SRE or SEE are given supervised alternative meaningful activities.

Combined Christian
This is a combined group of churches within the local area. All of these organisations are on the Department of Education's list of approved providers. Additional details of the program, the scope and sequence for this curriculum are available here Curriculum.
Special religious education (SRE) is education in the beliefs and practices of an approved religious persuasion. Under the Education Act 1990, section 32, government schools allow time for special religious education. It is delivered by authorised representatives of approved religious groups to students who have nominated that religion.

At Oatley Public School, we support high potential and gifted students by providing opportunities to extend and challenge their learning. Teachers identify students through ongoing assessment and observation, recognising strengths in areas such as creativity, leadership, problem solving and sport.
Learning is adjusted through flexible grouping, open-ended tasks and targeted extension, ensuring students remain engaged and continue to grow.

Our learning approach
At Oatley Public School, Every child a success shapes how we teach every day. Our teachers use explicit teaching, clearly showing students what they are learning, why it matters and how to do it step by step. Strong literacy and numeracy skills are the foundation of all learning, supported by InitiaLit in the early years and PAT assessments that help teachers track progress and plan for each child’s needs. Learning at Oatley is student-centred, inclusive and practical, and our teachers use proven strategies and take part in ongoing professional learning to stay up to date with best practice.
Guided by our pillars of Environment, Community and Opportunity, students learn through hands-on SMART STEAM projects, use iPads and Chromebooks to build digital skills, and care for their environment through GreenSparks. Each student receives tailored support with a strong focus on wellbeing. Excursions, partnerships with local organisations and day care centres, our active P&C and our weekly newsletter connect learning with the wider community. Students also have many opportunities to shine through band, choir, debating, public speaking and sport, including PSSA competitions.
Helping students progress
At Oatley Public School, we believe every child a success starts with knowing each student well. We support every student’s academic progress by:
- using PAT assessments and regular classroom checks to track progress, and giving clear, timely feedback
- setting learning goals with each student so they know what they are working towards
- providing personalised learning plans and extra help from our specialist staff
- reporting on each student’s progress so parents and carers know how their child is doing
- running targeted literacy and numeracy groups, including InitiaLit support in the early years
- making wellbeing part of everyday learning across the school
- working closely with families through regular communication and our weekly newsletter
- supporting transitions, from local day care centres into Kindergarten, between stages of learning, and on to high school.
